Son of Rambow (2007): 5/5

too cool for school ye

too cool for school ye

I remember when my brother Nicco and cousin Jiggy and I used to play this game called Baby-ana Jones where Jiggy played Indy, Nicco played Marcus (i think)- and I was Short Round or whoever Indy girl there was. Oh the glory days of being half your age today, and I bet if we had a vidcam then to document our shenanigans I’m sure we would’ve made a movie to give ole Indy a run for his money.

Such was the case in this movie, Son of Rambow, a cutesy independent Brit Sundance Filmfest 2007 entry. Again, I find myself letting out another genuine ‘Awww’ in this heartwarming coming-of-age film only because I saw myself as a toned down Lee Carter, and also that these kids make amateur filmmaking and Rambo look cool. Albeit being half-assed in its quick animation sequences and that annoying French (transexual?) exchange student, ‘Rambow’ has fallen into my Recently Enjoyed Movies list and is a sweet reminder that reality and fantasy are truly arbitrary- but then again, who’s keeping score? Oh to be young(er) again! Watch this movie.

Brothers

Brothers of the Head (2006)

Brothers of the Head (2006): 5/5

Brothers of the Head is the story of conjoined twins Tom and Barry Howe – a freak show turned proto-punk sensation in the 1970’s. Brothers of the Head is directed by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe.

“It’s extremely Gothic,” goes one of the first lines of this mockumentary. Plucked from obscurity by a music promoter, groomed and geared for a rock and roll act, the twins later become known as The Bang Bang as their freak status becomes elevated but somewhat appropriated to a form of searing, aggressive rock. Throughout the movie you’ll even start to doubt the ‘mock’ part of the mockumentary; no wonder, as the events are somewhat based on real life accounts but writer Brian Aldiss , who also wrote the novel this movie’s based on, focuses on the twin’s negotiations between love, artistic rivalry ,and acceptance.

Watching this movie turned out to be extremely refreshing and upped the extraordinary into something we should actually celebrate. The movie works all throughout,. archival footage paired with great musical performances by the twins. Great lyrics to the songs Two-Way Romeo, Doola Dawla, and My Friend, as well as Barry’s My Friend (you ***t) haha.

It’s a real fun ride and one of the best movies i’ve seen that make the all-phoney seem all too real

Hallo we're brilliant!

The History Boys (2006)

The History Boys (2006): 5/5 stars

This movie reminds me of Dead Poets Society, Emperor’s Club, and uhm, About a Boy. About a boy- i don’t know why. Maybe it’s the British thing going on. The History Boys is one intelligent movie.

Set in the early 80’s, eight brilliant and talented students at prep school make it to top schools Oxford but with a small problem- “they’re clever but they’re crass!” . So a history teacher is sent in to change their manners and style but to no avail. History is just one thing after another, one student muses. And how true that was! The performances are amazing, everyone was so energetic you’l feel like you’ve attented the stage play itself. It’s impossible not to love these characters with their humor and, especially that Dakin everyone (even the guys) seem to fall for.

It’s vibrant, it’s funny, enjoyable, and you’ll definitely be moved. Watch this for a brief lesson in history.

“Somebody hit that boy!”
